Mooncakes then and now

EVERYONE is reminded of when the Mid-Autumn Festival is occurring, not because they diligently keep track of the dates on their calendars, but because they start seeing the biggest representative of the festival everywhere right around the period: mooncakes.

Mooncakes, known as ‘Yue Bing’ in Mandarin, are a form of traditional sweet or salty Chinese pastry, typically made with lotus seed paste and egg yolk. The mention of mooncake would usually conjure up specific images on everyone’s mind, which is a brownish dessert shaped like a full moon.
